{"id":1292,"date":"2010-07-18T18:53:06","date_gmt":"2010-07-19T00:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1292"},"modified":"2010-07-18T18:53:28","modified_gmt":"2010-07-19T00:53:28","slug":"revisiting-another-old-video-game","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1292","title":{"rendered":"Revisiting another old video game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone ever hear of a computer game called &#8220;The Sims&#8221;?\u00a0 I know, it&#8217;s pretty darn obscure.\u00a0 I bought the first version back in&#8230; oh&#8230; let&#8217;s check Wikipedia again&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>2000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/96512_sims1_screen3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1293\" title=\"96512_sims1_screen3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/96512_sims1_screen3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/96512_sims1_screen3-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/96512_sims1_screen3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I remember I was reading about what a different kind of game it was.\u00a0 I found it appealing because I liked to design, build, and decorate the houses.\u00a0 The game never had much replay value to me, because I really couldn&#8217;t care less about what those dumb twit little sims do after I made the house.<\/p>\n<p>Except for the maid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/maid.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1294\" title=\"maid\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/maid.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"254\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThere&#8217;s something about maids that lends itself easily to my fembot fantasies.\u00a0 And I discovered that if I paused the game while the maid was in the house, then built walls around her without any door&#8230; she&#8217;d robotically strut back and forth in sim-confusion&#8230; not knowing how to get out.\u00a0 It looked like a robot maid malfunction to me.<\/p>\n<p>But that got old too.\u00a0 The game was slow and hard to play on my first PC, but on the newest one I have, there are no problems at all.\u00a0 Hooray for modern hardware.\u00a0 And I noticed something too.\u00a0 I play this game so infrequently that usually each time I play it, I&#8217;ve reinstalled it some time after a re-installation of Windows.\u00a0 Today is the first time I&#8217;ve played it since the last time I&#8217;ve reinstalled Windows on that fast machine.\u00a0 And before that it was the same situation.<\/p>\n<p>My guess is that the next time I play it, I will have reinstalled Windows XP again and hence the game as well.\u00a0 Actually, I&#8217;m certain of this because I need to get Windows XP SP2 back on that machine instead of SP3.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t install the driver for my video capture device under SP3.<\/p>\n<p>Well, screw all of that because I&#8217;m going to bed now.\u00a0 I have another god damned week of work ahead of me.\u00a0 And I have to do all the work because the people I work with:<\/p>\n<p>a) don&#8217;t care about their job any more<br \/>\nb) are epically lazy<br \/>\nc) are lazy, stupid, arrogant and in dire need of being fired<br \/>\nd) new and untrained<\/p>\n<p>Yay.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and the monitor for that computer is dying.\u00a0 Fuck.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone ever hear of a computer game called &#8220;The Sims&#8221;?\u00a0 I know, it&#8217;s pretty darn obscure.\u00a0 I bought the first version back in&#8230; oh&#8230; let&#8217;s check Wikipedia again&#8230; 2000.
