{"id":1323,"date":"2010-07-23T18:21:23","date_gmt":"2010-07-24T00:21:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1323"},"modified":"2010-07-25T17:21:57","modified_gmt":"2010-07-25T23:21:57","slug":"windows-security-rant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1323","title":{"rendered":"Windows &#8220;Security&#8221; rant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Windows started life as a stand-alone workstation OS.\u00a0 Which is fine, if you don&#8217;t want any of that &#8220;networking&#8221; stuff bogging you down.\u00a0 Back in the 80s, when Bill Gates was actually writing code alongside his Microsoft cohorts, and when Max Headroom stuttered his way into our hearts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MaxHeadroom1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1324\" title=\"MaxHeadroom1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MaxHeadroom1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MaxHeadroom1-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/MaxHeadroom1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNo one wanted or needed to connect the office computers to each other.\u00a0 The computer was still mainly just something to let you use a spreadsheet (read: gift-from-gods) and to use the printer.\u00a0 Dot matrix, all the way baby.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Dot-Matrix.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1325\" title=\"Dot Matrix\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/Dot-Matrix.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"294\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nNo, not that Dot Matrix.\u00a0 This:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/DOTMTRX.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1326\" title=\"DOTMTRX\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/DOTMTRX-300x233.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"233\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/DOTMTRX-300x233.gif 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/DOTMTRX.gif 493w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBut before I get too carried away with inserting silly pictures here&#8230; let me get back to my point.\u00a0 Windows was never intended to be used in a network.\u00a0 This goes from Windows 1.0, through to 2.0, 3.1, NT, 95, 98, 2000, Me, XP, Vista, and 7.\u00a0 But everyone uses Windows to access the internet, don&#8217;t they?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, not everyone.\u00a0 Most people.<\/p>\n<p>And most people who run Windows are forced by the lax nature of their OS&#8217;s security features to install and run software that enhances said security.<\/p>\n<p>Linux, BSD and to some extent Mac users thumb their noses at Windows users and boisterously proclaim &#8220;Virus?\u00a0 What virus!?&#8221;\u00a0 Mac users thumb their nose at everyone else, but that&#8217;s another story.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll talk about the noses of Mac users and how said noses are all covered with the shit of St. Steve Jobs some other time.<\/p>\n<p>But for now, I&#8217;ll just mention 3 things.\u00a0 Antivirus, Anti-Spyware, Firewall.\u00a0 I have to run all 3 on my Windows machine&#8230; the only one I allow net access beside the virtual Windows XP running here inside my Linux box.<\/p>\n<p>But on that Windows Laptop, I need to block unwanted internet traffic, filter out bad things and even (horror of horrors) remove malware once it&#8217;s found its way onto my computer.<\/p>\n<p>So I run Avast Antivirus, Spybot Search &amp; Destroy, and a software firewall.\u00a0 That slows the computer down, and can be easily defeated by the very latest malware&#8230; but it protects that computer from most harmful stuff.<\/p>\n<p>I was running a firewall called &#8220;COMODO&#8221;, but because the newest version won&#8217;t install&#8230;.
