{"id":1874,"date":"2012-10-06T18:24:07","date_gmt":"2012-10-07T00:24:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1874"},"modified":"2012-10-06T18:26:07","modified_gmt":"2012-10-07T00:26:07","slug":"oh-mint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1874","title":{"rendered":"Oh, Mint"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I really tried to like you, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linux_Mint\" target=\"_blank\">Mint<\/a>.\u00a0 I really like your philosophy, and the fact that you&#8217;re moving away from the clone-Apple\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 policies of Ubuntu.\u00a0 So I was disappointed when I first tried installing you back in 2008.\u00a0 The &#8220;Fluxbox&#8221; version I booted with a Live CD on my laptop looked so damn seductive, and it seemed quite fast and full-featured for Fluxbox.\u00a0 But alas, after I installed you, you wouldn&#8217;t boot.\u00a0 So I gave you the boot.<\/p>\n<p>I next tried you on this very computer, my replica Commodore 64.\u00a0 I tried the new 64 bit Debian edition with Xfce, but alas, package management was broken after I installed.\u00a0 WTF?\u00a0 Package management broken means no updates, and no way for my limited means to try to fix anything.<\/p>\n<p>So again, we bid adieu.<\/p>\n<p>And today, on that same laptop where you once wouldn&#8217;t boot, I installed your 32 bit Debian edition flavoured with Xfce.\u00a0 It looked so nice.\u00a0 It was very fast compared to Xubuntu, but curses and invocations!\u00a0 You didn&#8217;t feel like installing the proprietary driver for my Broadcom wireless card!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/fallen_angel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1875\" title=\"fallen_angel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/fallen_angel-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/fallen_angel-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/fallen_angel.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To Hell with you!<\/p>\n<p>Seriously, what the fuck, Mint?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/20987052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1876\" title=\"20987052\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/20987052-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/20987052-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/20987052-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/20987052.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m going to just install Lubuntu on that thing.\u00a0 Meh.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t like all the goofiness with <del>Inanity<\/del> Unity, and I sure as fuck don&#8217;t want Amazon ads all over my OS, thanks very much Mr. Shuttleworth.\u00a0 But Mint was the next best option for me.\u00a0 I am not a Linux programmer, yet I want to be able to customize and alter my system and setup.\u00a0 So with a *buntu I will stay for now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I really tried to like you, Mint.\u00a0 I really like your philosophy, and the fact that you&#8217;re moving away from the clone-Apple\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 policies of Ubuntu.\u00a0 So I was disappointed when I first tried installing you back in 2008.\u00a0 The &#8220;Fluxbox&#8221;
