{"id":1889,"date":"2012-10-20T12:36:50","date_gmt":"2012-10-20T18:36:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1889"},"modified":"2012-10-20T12:36:50","modified_gmt":"2012-10-20T18:36:50","slug":"oy-mint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=1889","title":{"rendered":"Oy Mint!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I tried to give Linux Mint another try.\u00a0 This time I tried Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon, 32 Bit.\u00a0 And I tried it on a computer that I&#8217;ve never tried to install Mint on before.<\/p>\n<p>The live DVD wouldn&#8217;t even boot.<\/p>\n<p>So as not to make the downloading and burning of that ISO a total waste, I decided to boot my laptop with it and check out Cinnamon.<\/p>\n<p>Holy fucking graphical errors, Batman!<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t take a screenshot, but here is a reconstruction I just made in MS Paint:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Mint-on-my-laptop.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1890\" title=\"Mint on my laptop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Mint-on-my-laptop-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Mint-on-my-laptop-300x225.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Mint-on-my-laptop.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s pretty much all I saw.\u00a0 When I clicked on icons and the Mint menu, other empty rectangles would appear on different parts of the crashed-out blue background.\u00a0 How very minimalist.\u00a0 But it looks nothing like what I was expecting:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Linux-Mint-13-Cinnamon-Desktop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1891\" title=\"Linux-Mint-13-Cinnamon-Desktop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Linux-Mint-13-Cinnamon-Desktop-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Linux-Mint-13-Cinnamon-Desktop-300x224.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Linux-Mint-13-Cinnamon-Desktop.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I guess I&#8217;ll never know if Cinnamon is alright and usable for a guy like me.\u00a0 And I think this (sadly) kills off any experimentation I have with Mint as a Linux distro.\u00a0 So far I&#8217;ve only had success with Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and Puppy Linux.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s also fondly remember the late Fluxbuntu that breathed life back into my first PC years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Why is this important?\u00a0 Ha!\u00a0 Trick question.\u00a0 This is far from important&#8230; but it sort of is to me.\u00a0 You see, Ubuntu is going in a direction that I don&#8217;t like.\u00a0 First with UI choices like Unity and now with adware like Amazon.com search results whenever you try to search for something on your computer.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t have to put up with any of that since I don&#8217;t use actual Ubuntu, but I&#8217;d rather just go to another distro altogether like Debian that still adheres to that Open Source ethos.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, rant over.<\/p>\n<p>Adios, Mint.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Well, I tried to give Linux Mint another try.\u00a0 This time I tried Linux Mint 13 with Cinnamon, 32 Bit.\u00a0 And I tried it on a computer that I&#8217;ve never tried to install Mint on before.
