{"id":2269,"date":"2013-06-08T04:52:27","date_gmt":"2013-06-08T10:52:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=2269"},"modified":"2013-06-08T04:52:27","modified_gmt":"2013-06-08T10:52:27","slug":"a-tale-of-epic-backup-and-defrag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=2269","title":{"rendered":"A tale of epic backup and defrag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What am I doing up at 4am?<\/p>\n<p>I was all done sleeping, I guess.\u00a0 And what better time to regale you with tales of shit which you care not the least!\u00a0 Like the subject of these two partial screenshots I took back in January that I thought were remarkable at the time.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2270\" alt=\"Defrag\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag-300x32.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"32\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag-300x32.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag.png 767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\n<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2271\" alt=\"Defrag2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Defrag2.png\" width=\"238\" height=\"144\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The top image shows how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.piriform.com\/defraggler\" target=\"_blank\">Defraggler<\/a> saw one of my external hard drives after I had loaded it up with a consolidated batch of video and audio files.\u00a0 The deep blue squares are contiguous files, the light blue are contiguous but spaced out, and the red are fragmented.\u00a0 Fucking <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NTFS\" target=\"_blank\">NTFS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The bottom image shows some data about that drive.\u00a0 With only about a third actually being fragmented, Defraggler still figured it would take about a day to sort that mess out.\u00a0 Since this was back in January, I don&#8217;t remember exactly how long that took, but I do remember it was longer than two days.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s a 1TB drive.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t use NTFS as a file system for my other external hard drives.\u00a0 I use <a href=\"en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ext4\" target=\"_blank\">ext4<\/a> because with a modern and well designed files system like that, there is no need to defragment because files don&#8217;t get written all stupid in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>All this also reminds me that I bought a bunch of bluray discs so I can make physical backups of some other video files I have.\u00a0 After losing a bunch of music I had worked on in a hard drive crash, I&#8217;ve learned that one can never have too many backups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What am I doing up at 4am?
