{"id":2522,"date":"2013-06-18T20:35:04","date_gmt":"2013-06-19T02:35:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=2522"},"modified":"2014-09-07T21:44:58","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T03:44:58","slug":"golfyssey-10-sega-master-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=2522","title":{"rendered":"Golfyssey 10 \u2014 Sega Master System"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How is it that the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Master_System\" target=\"_blank\">Sega Master System<\/a> &#8211; which was technically a better game console than the NES in many ways &#8211; failed to make much of a dent in Nintendo&#8217;s sales, and failed to even have a fraction of the amount of decent games made for it?\u00a0 Why are there just a handful of bona fide classics for the SMS while the NES library is just bursting with classic titles?<\/p>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s infamous <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nintendo_Entertainment_System#Third-party_licensing\" target=\"_blank\">licensing contracts<\/a> that it made publishers sign are the main reason.\u00a0 The NES hardware had a head start on the SMS in all markets, and Nintendo had been watching Atari&#8217;s lead in the previous console generation and the concomitant industry crash.\u00a0 And Nintendo had taken away some valuable lessons.\u00a0 That Wikipedia article explains what went on in great detail, but this is the main point: Publishers who made games for the NES could not make any games for any other system for two years.\u00a0 At all.\u00a0 No exceptions.<\/p>\n<p>Why did publishers agree to this?\u00a0 By the time they did agree to these contracts, Nintendo had all but resurrected the once dead video game market in North America by themselves, and they were virtually a monopoly in that region.\u00a0 Game publishers looked around and just didn&#8217;t see anybody else in the game, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>These contracts were later ruled to be anticompetitive and the US&#8217;s Federal Trade Commission made Nintendo play nice.\u00a0 But the damage to the competition had been done.<\/p>\n<p>It was into this corrosive climate that Sega brought out the successor to the SG-1000, the Master System.\u00a0 With better hardware than Nintendo&#8217;s console, they still had a devil of a time finding publishers willing to sacrifice the ready money of NES titles for the untested waters of a newer console.\u00a0 The SMS did however sell well in Europe, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oceania\" target=\"_blank\">Oceania<\/a> and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>It is because of this general lack of games that it is rather hard to find artistically made games that push the systems hardware and take full advantage of its capabilities.\u00a0 As a consequence, a lot of SMS games look pretty bad and certainly don&#8217;t run any faster or better than similar games for the NES.<\/p>\n<p>Peering into the tiny corner of this game world that houses the golf games was pleasantly surprising.\u00a0 I found four golf games, and I will talk about three of them.\u00a0 The first one was just bad, so I won&#8217;t review it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s called Golf Mania and it&#8217;s one of those constant music action-fests that might be good for the kids. The next up is called &#8220;Great Golf&#8221; and it&#8217;s from 1986.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2523\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"Great Golf\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf-216x300.jpg 216w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kind of cartoony.\u00a0 The early NES games suffered from this same problem.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard when you have such a limited colour palette and deadlines to meet.\u00a0 But what I like about this game is that there is no stupid music playing constantly.\u00a0 That&#8217;s a plus.<\/p>\n<p>Before you get into the actual game, you see a panning shot of the entire course so that you can get a feel for the layout.\u00a0 I much prefer a map or a top-down view for this, but it is what it is.\u00a0 The actual game play is pretty standard, though the controls are relatively simple.\u00a0 Again, up &amp; down for clubs, left &amp; right for aiming.\u00a0 The power meter only requires two button presses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf-02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2525\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/Great-Golf-02-300x232.png\" alt=\"Great Golf 02\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve made the shot, you get to see your rather oversize ball go sailing through the rather oversize trees.<\/p>\n<p><a Let&#8217;s try another one.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;World Class Leader Board&#8221;, 1991<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/World-Class-Leaderboard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2530\" sequel to the famous &#8220;Leaderboard Golf&#8221; game that I reviewed in the Commodore 64 section.\u00a0 One would think that coming five years later on much improved hardware, the game would be revamped and greatly improved.\u00a0 But since this is the Sega Master System we&#8217;re talking about, we should get used to letdowns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/World-Class-Leaderboard-02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2533\" that I can say really got better is that they attempted to add voice clips in the form of heavily digitized sound clips.\u00a0 They really shouldn&#8217;t have bothered, because they sound so terrible that they&#8217;re almost incomprehensible.\u00a0 Other than that, somehow this version is just not as good and not as polished as the Commodore 64 version.\u00a0 I wish I were joking.\u00a0 Seeing as how &#8220;Leaderboard Golf&#8221; is such a great, awesome, fun, outstanding game, you owe it to yourself to play a version of it.\u00a0 So go download the Commodore 64 version and a Commodore 64 emulator.\u00a0 Forget about the SMS version.<\/p>\n<p>Last but definitely not least we have &#8220;PGA Tour Golf&#8221; from 1993.<\/p>\n<p><a nice surprise.\u00a0 This is a direct port to the SMS of a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sega_Genesis\" target=\"_blank\">Sega Genesis<\/a> game.\u00a0 And that Sega Genesis game just happens to hold the #1 spot on my list of favourite golf video games of all time.<\/p>\n<p>The SMS had several ports like this.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a decent &#8220;Ecco the Dolphin&#8221; port and a &#8220;Sonic the Hedgehog&#8221; port to name two.\u00a0 These came out in the 90s while the SMS was still pretty popular and cheap in some countries.\u00a0 The fact that an awesome game like &#8220;PGA Tour Golf&#8221; could be pulled off on the hardware at all proves that this console really was a better computer than the NES.<\/p>\n<p>You get to see a &#8220;flyby&#8221; of the hole before you begin your round:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/PGA-Tour-Golf-04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter it.\u00a0 The power meter takes 3-button presses, and in this version it&#8217;s rather easy.\u00a0 When you make your swing, the golfer is fully animated and so is the ball.\u00a0 The physics are quite realistic.\u00a0 This is a quality port of a quality game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/PGA-Tour-Golf-07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" it still has the instant replay for some of the more remarkable shots you make.\u00a0 And even though it&#8217;s on an 80s 8-bit console, &#8220;PGA Tour Golf&#8221; is still a great game.\u00a0 This could be hours of fun for anyone with a real SMS or a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sega_Game_Gear\" target=\"_blank\">Game Gear<\/a>.\u00a0 If you&#8217;ve downloaded the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.smspower.org\/meka\/\" target=\"_blank\">Meka emulator<\/a> like I rudely ordered you to earlier, then definitely take a look for this ROM and give it a try.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fast-paced without being flashy and annoying like some of the other golf games I&#8217;ve reviewed recently.\u00a0 If it wasn&#8217;t for the much better Genesis version, then &#8220;PGA Tour
