Carnage 04 &#8211; Apple ]["},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Another 8-bit machine from the 1970s &#8211; the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_II\" target=\"_blank\">Apple II<\/a> &#8211; had its share of driving games.\u00a0 Prepare not to be blown away by amazing displays of graphics and sound.<\/p>\n<p>You know, if I could stretch the boundaries of what I consider to be a racing game by wide enough margins, I could call &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Oregon_Trail_%28video_game%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Oregon Trail<\/a>&#8221; a racing game and review it.\u00a0 That would make this post way more fun and interesting.\u00a0 But I don&#8217;t think I could really get away with that now, could I?\u00a0 I&#8217;m more likely to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mG56PK8qnhg\" target=\"_blank\">break my arm or die of dysentery<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Autobahn (1981)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3525\" alt=\"Autobahn 01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-01-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-01-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-01-1024x703.png those &#8220;high-res&#8221; graphics.\u00a0 This game is a fairly simple top-down view racer with keyboard control.\u00a0 The arrow keys control steering as well as speed control.\u00a0 The space bar starts the game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-02.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3526\" alt=\"Autobahn 02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-02-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-02-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-02-1024x703.png the Apple II.\u00a0 You must dodge other cars and the sides of the track.\u00a0 You only get three &#8220;lives&#8221; or cars or whatever you want to call them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3527\" alt=\"Autobahn 03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-03-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-03-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-03-1024x703.png other cars look.\u00a0 The AI seems pretty good too, and this game is challenging.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3528\" alt=\"Autobahn 04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Autobahn-04-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" the race track causes you to spin out and crash.<\/p>\n<p>Not a bad game, but not the best.\u00a0 The sound is absolutely atrocious, which is what you would expect from an Apple II.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Night Driver (19??)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-art.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3533\" alt=\"Night Driver art\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-art-250x300.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-art-250x300.jpg 250w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-art-856x1024.jpg 856w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-art.jpg 902w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the same game as the more famous arcade game with the same name.\u00a0 It is similar in many ways though.\u00a0 Unlike all the games I&#8217;ve reviewed for the Apple II so far, this game utilizes the joystick!\u00a0 Hooray!\u00a0 Well, it actually used a paddle back in the day, and it used the keyboard too.\u00a0 Here is the instruction screen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" gamepad just fine.\u00a0 Once the race starts up, you&#8217;re racing solo down a dark street with only the barest hint of a road or a track to guide you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-021.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3538\" alt=\"Night Driver 02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-021-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" the way to the horizon.\u00a0 So what the fuck was your problem, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Superman_%281999_video_game%29\" target=\"_blank\">Superman for the Nintendo 64<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium asphalt&#8230; I can&#8217;t actually see what you&#8217;re driving on.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Night-Driver-05.png\"><img sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you crash, you are rated.\u00a0 I am a menace.<\/p>\n<p>Like the original &#8220;Night Driver&#8221; arcade game, the total darkness aspect of this game was used to obfuscate the severe limitations of the hardware.\u00a0 I wasn&#8217;t actually expecting to find any first-person driving games on the Apple II, and I&#8217;m not surprised that one of those that I found looks like this.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">International Gran Prix (1981)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This one is another first-person racing game, and it is better than &#8220;Night Driver&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3550\" alt=\"International Gran Prix 01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-01-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-01-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-01-1024x703.png 1024w, different courses, though with the Apple II&#8217;s graphics, they all look about the same.<\/p>\n<p><a by paddle, and if you&#8217;re using an emulator that means joystick or gamepad.\u00a0 Or paddle, I guess, if you&#8217;re some sort of weirdo who owns a USB paddle controller.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-03.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3552\" these reviews anyway &#8211; it&#8217;s most certainly not the first game like this) an interesting feature.\u00a0 You must be conscious of the amount of fuel you carry.\u00a0 Too much fuel will make your car heavier and too slow.\u00a0 To little fuel will cause you to run out of gas before the race is finished.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3553\" difficulty settings.\u00a0 These are done the way most racing games handle difficulty &#8211; by adjusting &#8220;skid&#8221; control.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-05.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3554\" those settings, you&#8217;re ready to race.\u00a0 You get counted down with those starting lights on the right side of the screen.\u00a0 The bottom of the screen is mostly self-explanatory, except for that little graphic in the middle.\u00a0 That represents the sides of the road and the position of your wheels.\u00a0 You can see at a glance if you are taking a turn too sharply, or if you are getting too close to the edge of the track.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-06.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3555\" alt=\"International Gran Prix 06\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-06-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-06-300x206.png 300w, well-thought-out game, and I was quite pleasantly surprised to find something this in-depth for a computer as primitive as the Apple II.\u00a0 There are no other cars on the road, and the object of the game is to make it to the finish line as fast as you can.\u00a0 The joystick button accelerates, and releasing it will let the car come to a stop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3556\" alt=\"International Gran Prix 07\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-07-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-07-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-07-1024x703.png 1024w, screen will flash with the names of landmarks as you pass them.\u00a0 I guess this is meant to make up for the lack of actual detail on-screen.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3557\" alt=\"International Gran Prix 08\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-08-300x206.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-08-300x206.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/International-Gran-Prix-08-1024x703.png 1024w, playing &#8220;International Gran Prix&#8221; that Richard Orban tried to make it as realistic a simulation of a driving race as he could.\u00a0 One thing he could not overcome was the severe hardware limitation of the Apple II.\u00a0 This game is incredibly slow, and sadly, playing it doesn&#8217;t feel like a race at all.\u00a0 On a real Apple II, there would be no way around this.<\/p>\n<p>As I played, I got to thinking.\u00a0 I remembered how Apple released a faster, beefier, improved version of the Apple II called the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apple_IIGS\">Apple IIGS<\/a>.\u00a0 Although this machine was ostensibly compatible with all Apple II software, it would run games faster because of the higher clock speed of the processor used.<\/p>\n<p>So if you had an Apple IIGS, this game might play more like a race, and it might be way more enjoyable.\u00a0 But since I&#8217;m playing this game on AppleWin, I can\u00a0 really mess with the speed!\u00a0 Take a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=3354\" target=\"_blank\">fixing the flaws of the Atari 5200<\/a>, an emulator broke through the limitations of the Apple II and made a very well-designed racing game fun to play.\u00a0 This is the only way I can recommend playing &#8220;International Gran Prix&#8221;, and this game is the only Apple II racing game that I think is worth playing.\u00a0 Even though it&#8217;s not much to look at, and even less to listen to, I did have fun playing it after all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another 8-bit machine
