{"id":361,"date":"2010-02-18T20:17:41","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T03:17:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=361"},"modified":"2010-02-18T22:37:08","modified_gmt":"2010-02-19T05:37:08","slug":"lxde-the-cure-for-what-ails-our-older-pcs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=361","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;LXDE &#8211; the cure for what ails our older PCs&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not my headline, but one from <a href=\"http:\/\/education.zdnet.com\/?p=3645\" target=\"_blank\">Christopher Dawson over at ZDNet<\/a>.\u00a0 Seeing as how I&#8217;m under the effect of another bloody Chinook headache, and seeing as how I can&#8217;t get the neurons firing to think of a topic to blab about myself, I will just let you read that.<\/p>\n<p>And read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linux-mag.com\/cache\/7520\/1.html\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> too, because it&#8217;s got some nice detailed info.\u00a0 That second article is actually where I first read about &#8220;Lubuntu&#8221;.\u00a0 And now I use &#8220;Lubuntu&#8221; on 4 of my computers.\u00a0 The only computer that still runs basic Ubuntu with Gnome and Nautilus is my newest one, with 2 cores and 4 gigs of memory.<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t think right now&#8230; fucking headache.\u00a0 So I&#8217;ll copy &amp; paste some numbers:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>Lubuntu: 57,908 KB<br \/>\nXubuntu: 156,852 KB<br \/>\nUbuntu: 153,840 KB<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s memory usage on a fresh install at the point when the desktop has finished loading.\u00a0 I used to use Xubuntu, and actually 3 of those &#8220;Lubuntu&#8221; machines of mine are still basically Xubuntu machines with the LXDE package installed.\u00a0 My first computer has a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04 that got the lovely, shiny LXDE desktop put on it.\u00a0 What Mr. Dawson says in his post is very true.\u00a0 For a simple user-friendly Linux distro for older hardware, you can&#8217;t go wrong with Lubuntu.<\/p>\n<p>Now the problem, as I see it.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lubuntu#Release_history\" target=\"_blank\">Lubuntu<\/a> technically doesn&#8217;t exist as an installable OS yet.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/wiki.ubuntu.com\/Lubuntu#Download%20Lubuntu\" target=\"_blank\">download<\/a> and try out a Live CD, but that CD won&#8217;t give you an option to install.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s coming in April, but to get it the way I did is easy.\u00a0 Just install the LXDE desktop package to your system.\u00a0 My Ubuntu 8.04 installation didn&#8217;t include the LXDE package, so I had to add a Launchpad repository to my software sources list.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re a Windows user and you have no idea what I&#8217;m babbling about, never mind.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d go into more detail and give some more links, but my head hurts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.ca\/images?as_st=y&amp;hl=en&amp;safe=off&amp;sa=1&amp;q=%22lxde%22&amp;btnG=Search&amp;aq=f&amp;oq=&amp;start=0\" target=\"_blank\">Check out what LXDE looks like<\/a>.\u00a0 I fell in love with it not only because it&#8217;s extremely efficient and full-featured, but also because it looks so damn good!\u00a0 You can use GTK themes with it too, and I had some leftover from my Xubuntu days that mesh with LXDE just perfectly.<\/p>\n<p>The only gripe I have about my &#8220;Lubuntu&#8221; setups are that I have to mount and unmount media manually.\u00a0 Meh.\u00a0 Small annoyance, but I&#8217;m sure with the Ubuntu people working on it, there will be an improvement there too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not my headline, but one from Christopher Dawson over at ZDNet.\u00a0 Seeing as how I&#8217;m under the effect of another bloody Chinook headache, and seeing as how I can&#8217;t get the neurons firing to think of a topic to blab about myself, I will just let you read that.
