{"id":53,"date":"2009-12-18T20:49:16","date_gmt":"2009-12-19T03:49:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=53"},"modified":"2009-12-18T21:20:31","modified_gmt":"2009-12-19T04:20:31","slug":"song-of-the-day-spirits-in-the-material-world-by-the-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=53","title":{"rendered":"Song of the Day: &#8220;Spirits in the Material World&#8221; by The Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In theory, I should like &#8220;Ghost in the Machine&#8221; the best of all albums by The Police.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got a very eclectic set, some sax, and Stewart Copeland, who is one of my favorite drummers.<\/p>\n<p>But the songs don&#8217;t really stick in my head as much as the ones from Synchronicity.\u00a0 So much for overanalyzing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cDs9zbiumDc\" target=\"_blank\">This song<\/a> though, is great.\u00a0 (Watch that YouTube video to the end, it has a neat interview with Stewart Copeland.) It&#8217;s kind of fuck ed up and not really there&#8230; and I think the music fits the lyrics perfectly.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not a fan of Carl Jung, or of Freud for that matter.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t really care about what either psychoanalyst had to say.\u00a0 Freud did lots of coke though&#8230; so you think that a rock band would base lots of their songs on what HE had to say rather than Jung.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps a concept album called &#8220;Tell me about your muzzer.&#8221;\u00a0 That&#8217;s supposed to be read in a German accent.\u00a0 Muzzer = Mother.\u00a0 Never mind.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m really tired and I have a nasty bad fucking headache from the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chinook_wind\" target=\"_blank\">chinook<\/a> today.\u00a0 There will probably not be any genuinely funny jokes in this post, but feel free to laugh at my predicament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;HA! when the weather warms up from below freezing, Mike&#8217;s head feels like it&#8217;s gonna &#8216;SPLODE!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I suppose that is funny&#8230; from an outside observer.<\/p>\n<p>Fuck you then!<\/p>\n<p>Fuck you all and your ability to not even notice drastic changes in atmospheric pressure!<\/p>\n<p>The album cover for this Police album is supposed to be 3 heads\/faces.\u00a0 Andy Summers, Sting, Stewart Copeland.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t see it.\u00a0 Even though I know what it supposed to be hair, nose, mouth, etc, I don&#8217;t see 3 faces there.\u00a0 It looks to me like a digital display that has been &#8220;invaded by a ghost&#8221;.\u00a0 A coworker of mine told me the face story and Wikipedia says it&#8217;s so also.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-55\" title=\"Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Ghost_In_The_Machine_cover.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><br \/>\nStill can&#8217;t see it.<\/p>\n<p>Also, I can never see how there is supposed to be a face on the Moon, or the &#8220;Man in the Moon.&#8221;<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-54\" title=\"594px-Full_Moon_Luc_Viatour\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/594px-Full_Moon_Luc_Viatour-297x300.jpg\" alt=\"594px-Full_Moon_Luc_Viatour\" width=\"297\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/594px-Full_Moon_Luc_Viatour-297x300.jpg 297w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/594px-Full_Moon_Luc_Viatour.jpg 594w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 297px) 100vw, 297px\" \/><br \/>\nHere&#8217;s an assignment for any readers I have of this blog.\u00a0 (I am guessing this is a low number.)\u00a0 Please somehow draw the fucking man on the moon in the above pic for me.\u00a0 Does it have eyes?\u00a0 Is it head-on or profile?\u00a0 Does it look a lot like Bob Hope?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another digression.\u00a0 I got the complete collection of Monty Python&#8217;s Flying Circus shows earlier this week.\u00a0 Zoy!\u00a0 I remember several years ago, I saw the DVD set being offered for around $400.\u00a0 I decided not to go for it at that time, because COME FUCKING ON!<\/p>\n<p>Last week, I saw it on Amazon for $90.\u00a0 Sold!\u00a0 I&#8217;m backing it up right now, using AcidRip in Linux.\u00a0 Fine, fine copies it makes, although the interface is very confusing.\u00a0 I still haven&#8217;t figured out how to queue jobs.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, this digression leads back to the Song of The Day, because I bought The Police box set back in the early 90s, and that was also a complete collection.\u00a0 Except for live albums.\u00a0 I wonder if the band members hated each other all through their short career.\u00a0 I wonder if they insulted and told each other off upon being introduced.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine Sting saying &#8220;Congratulations, Mr. Summers, you&#8217;re our new guitarist.\u00a0 I fucking hate you by the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I hope Sting doesn&#8217;t sue me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In theory, I should like &#8220;Ghost in the Machine&#8221; the best of all albums by The Police.\u00a0 It&#8217;s got a very eclectic set, some sax, and Stewart Copeland, who is one of my favorite drummers.
