{"id":620,"date":"2010-04-01T21:12:45","date_gmt":"2010-04-02T03:12:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=620"},"modified":"2010-04-01T21:12:45","modified_gmt":"2010-04-02T03:12:45","slug":"bring-back-windows-3-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=620","title":{"rendered":"Bring back Windows 3.1!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, my opinion of Ed Bott is that he&#8217;s a shill and an \u00c1\u0153ber Fanboy for Microsoft.\u00a0 Still, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.zdnet.com\/Bott\/?p=1925&amp;tag=wrapper;col1\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> is fucking hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>And it has me thinking of Windows 3.1.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/163038-355-425.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-621\" title=\"163038-355-425\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/163038-355-425-250x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/163038-355-425-250x300.png 250w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/163038-355-425.png 355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A while ago I watched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b3d2UNvAwmA\" target=\"_blank\">this video<\/a> of someone running Windows 3.1 on a Nokia phone.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty neat trick.\u00a0 I have a very old monochrome Toshiba laptop with Windows 3.1 on it.\u00a0 It&#8217;s never really worth digging out and using because it&#8217;s a) monochrome and b) kind of broken.\u00a0 The power plug-in has a short in it, and the slightest touch of the cord when plugged in will make it lose the power connection.\u00a0 And the battery is dead.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/nt31mm.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-622\" title=\"nt31mm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/nt31mm-300x225.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/nt31mm-300x225.gif 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/nt31mm.gif 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But being a geek, and being a sucker for old-school 16-bit graphics, I have always like the look and feel of Windows 3.1.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even trolled e-bay a couple of times looking for an old non-broken colour laptop that will run Windows 3.1 just so I could play around with it.\u00a0 I would actually (seriously now, no foolin&#8217;) use it for writing.\u00a0 And old games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Windows_3.11_workspace.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-624\" title=\"Windows_3.11_workspace\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Windows_3.11_workspace-300x225.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Windows_3.11_workspace-300x225.gif 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Windows_3.11_workspace.gif 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.calmira.de\/\" target=\"_blank\">this<\/a> interesting bit of software.\u00a0 This is a &#8220;shell&#8221; for Windows 3.1 that gives the OS some of the functionality that was later added in Windows 95.\u00a0 Some of the screenshots make my geek heart beat a little faster.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere on the net there are tweaks that allow Windows 3.1 to access more of a modern systems memory, and display higher resolution desktops.\u00a0 I think that&#8217;s fascinating.<\/p>\n<p>Normal people either don&#8217;t remember Windows 3.1, or they do and they would think I&#8217;m weird, even for a geek.\u00a0 But give me an old-ish laptop with the right specs, and a fresh install of Windows 3.1, and just watch me create things on it.\u00a0 I&#8217;d even give that old Netscape Navigator a spin and see what I could see on whatever net connection I could muster up on it.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of mustard, I had some delicious powdered mustard on top of some smoked salmon on top of some other things today for supper.\u00a0 Delicious.<\/p>\n<p>And speaking of operating systems again, I think I&#8217;ll actually download and install the upcoming version of Ubuntu on my netbook now that I&#8217;ve brought it home from work.\u00a0 I skipped 9.10 entirely because of some rather bad things I read about it.\u00a0 And I&#8217;ve read a similar amount of different bad things about 10.04, so I know I won&#8217;t be bothering to install it on any other computers I own.\u00a0 God damn it Mr. Shuttleworth, the window control buttons go on the right!\u00a0 RIGHT!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/right-arrow.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-625\" title=\"right arrow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/right-arrow-292x300.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/right-arrow-292x300.gif 292w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/right-arrow.gif 546w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s a moot point anyway for me since I&#8217;m not really a fan of GNOME any more.\u00a0 I like LXDE too much.\u00a0 I think I&#8217;ll look at the Lubuntu project home page again and see if there will indeed be a Lubuntu this time around.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, my opinion of Ed Bott is that he&#8217;s a shill and an \u00c1\u0153ber Fanboy for Microsoft.\u00a0 Still, this is fucking hilarious.
