{"id":7136,"date":"2014-04-22T21:32:35","date_gmt":"2014-04-23T03:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=7136"},"modified":"2014-04-22T21:36:47","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T03:36:47","slug":"firefox-australis-and-add-ons-and-themes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/?p=7136","title":{"rendered":"Firefox &#8211; Australis and add-ons and themes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oh my!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2952569-george+takei.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-7137\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2952569-george+takei-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"2952569-george+takei\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2952569-george+takei-251x300.jpg 251w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/2952569-george+takei.jpg 302w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 251px) 100vw, 251px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I use Firefox for all of my browsing needs.\u00a0 This is because Mozilla is one of the few entities left who are actually still striving and working to keep things on the Internet open and free as opposed to closed and restricted.\u00a0 I also really like the browser itself because of the sheer amount of customizability that a user gets in the form of <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/\" target=\"_blank\">add-ons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since I am keenly interested in Firefox, I actually use two versions of it on my Linux desktop.\u00a0 One version is the standard release version &#8211; 28.0 as of right now.\u00a0 I also use the &#8220;Nightly&#8221; version, which is a very up-to-date version of the browser that can be used by anyone who wants to see what the Mozilla team is working on currently.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Australis&#8221; is the name that Mozilla has given to a major user interface redesign that will become standard as of version 29.\u00a0 I have been using it as part of the Nightly browser for at least a few months.\u00a0 Under the hood, I can only give praise for the improvements to the code and the performance enhancements introduced.<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve been only disappointed by the new look.\u00a0 Not everything has to look like Google fucking Chrome, okay?\u00a0 Before Australis, you could apply a custom theme to Firefox and make it look pretty much any damn way you wanted.\u00a0 You could move stuff and controls and buttons around, add and remove them at will, and it was awesome.\u00a0 Since my computer is rocking a retro look, I had some very retro themes installed.\u00a0 One makes this browser look like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mosaic_browser\" target=\"_blank\">Mosaic<\/a> , and another made my Nightly browser look like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Netscape_%28web_browser%29\" target=\"_blank\">Netscape<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Australis makes all the old themes break, and it also breaks a lot of the old-style customizability.\u00a0 You can still move stuff around, but not to the same extent as you used to be able to in the older version.\u00a0 This made me sad because I could no longer use my swanky Netscape-like Firefox, and I had to settle for some weird-ass button placement that doesn&#8217;t match my preferred setup that I&#8217;ve used for years.<\/p>\n<p>But then I read about an add-on called <a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/classicthemerestorer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Classic Theme Restorer<\/a>.\u00a0 I knew something like this would come along from the add-on community.\u00a0 It was only a matter of time.\u00a0 Since installing this addon, not only can I use my Netscape theme again, but the Nightly browser is faster than it was before.\u00a0 I am shocked at how much faster it is every time I use it now.\u00a0 It starts faster, it resizes faster, it switches tabs faster.\u00a0 It does everything faster since I installed this add-on.<\/p>\n<p>So now I&#8217;m wondering why Nightly was so slow without this add-on.\u00a0 Does having to render all those stupid Chrome-style curves and gradients really take up that much extra time?\u00a0 It baffles me.\u00a0 I have only ever seen add-ons slow down my browser, and since I only install add-ons that I need, I live with it.<\/p>\n<p>Finding this add-on makes me very happy about Firefox again.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be able to keep using my silly Netscape and Mosaic themes for my retro-look desktop.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Oh my!
