Voice Audio Tutorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was asked how to get some of those lovely robot voice effects in my audio, so here&#8217;s how I do it.\u00a0 I must explain first that the audio editing software I use is CoolEdit Pro for Windows.\u00a0 That&#8217;s very old software that&#8217;s no longer available, and is technically Adobe Audition now.\u00a0 Most people use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.audacityteam.org\/download\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audacity<\/a>, which is free and available for multiple platforms.\u00a0 I think most of these techniques will work with Audacity, but I&#8217;m not certain.<\/p>\n<p>First of all, it&#8217;s best to start with a good robot performance.\u00a0 If the idea is to sound like a robot, then the focus should be on sounding artificial, emotionless, and machine-like.\u00a0 There are examples of &#8220;semi-monotone&#8221; and &#8220;monotone&#8221; voices in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Dharma-Plastic-Doll-Kim-Coquette-Robot-Remix.mp3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this song, courtesy of Kim Coquette<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Once the performance is recorded, it can be worked on in an audio editor.\u00a0 Before doing this, make a backup copy of the original audio file.\u00a0 This is extremely important, as you don&#8217;t want to make changes to your audio, and then lose the ability to undo them.<\/p>\n<p>For this tutorial, I&#8217;ll use an excerpt from &#8220;Machine Encoded Learning Intelligence&#8221;, performed very robotically by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.niteflirt.com\/Natasha%20gets%20Nasty\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Natasha gets Nasty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example.mp3?_=1\" \/><a how the raw, unedited audio sounds (there are two characters talking to each other, incidentally).<\/p>\n<p>The first change I make is Noise Reduction.\u00a0 Not all recording microphones are created equal, but you don&#8217;t need to spend several hundred dollars on a professional recording microphone to get clear, clean sounding vocal audio.\u00a0 This is how you reduce noise in CoolEdit.<\/p>\n<p>Select a portion of the waveform with only noise:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-01.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8899\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8899 size-medium\" 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the Noise Reduction plugin and click Get Profile from Selection:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-02.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8900\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter have been set to maximize sound quality.\u00a0 Next, select the entire waveform:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-03.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8901\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8901 size-medium\" 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the Noise Reduction plugin again and click OK.\u00a0 Once it has completed, this is what it will sound like:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Noise-Reduction.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Noise-Reduction.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Noise-Reduction.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>This process may need to be repeated if the noise is heavy or variable.<\/p>\n<p>After this, you may want to equalize or &#8220;EQ&#8221; the audio.\u00a0 This is done to enhance or diminish certain frequencies in the audio, and give it (usually) a more natural sound.\u00a0 These are the settings I used for the &#8220;Machine Encoded Learning Intelligence&#8221; recording:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-04.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8905\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8905 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-04-300x179.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-04-300x179.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-04.png 542w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a simple 8-band equalizer, and these settings boost the bass frequencies, while diminishing the frequencies around 7.3K.\u00a0 Note also that the main volume has been amplified by 250%.\u00a0 This kind of profile won&#8217;t sound good on all audio, but it&#8217;s a good kind of fix for many standard computer microphones.\u00a0 (It&#8217;s worth keeping in mind that some audio doesn&#8217;t require EQing at all.)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the example sounds like after my EQing:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-3\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-EQ.mp3?_=3\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-EQ.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-EQ.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Next, there are effects that can make a voice sound &#8220;processed&#8221; or artificial in some way.\u00a0 In &#8220;Machine Encoded Learning Intelligence&#8221;, I used an FFT filter to eliminate low and high frequencies so that one of the voices would sound like it was coming out of a small electronic speaker.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-05.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8908\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8908 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-05-300x257.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-05-300x257.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-05.png 557w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a preset in CoolEdit Pro called &#8220;OnHold EQ&#8221; that cuts off all frequencies below 220 Hz, and all frequencies above approximately 3520 Hz.\u00a0 This is what it sounds like, when applied to some of the audio:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-4\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-FFT.mp3?_=4\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-FFT.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-FFT.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>There are other audio effects that can make a voice sound &#8220;robotic&#8221; or artificial.\u00a0 Some of these are presets within the CoolEdit Pro program, but it may be possible to duplicate them in Audacity.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-06.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8910\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8910 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-06-300x188.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-06-300x188.png 300w, http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-06.png 518w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is a delay effect called Flanger, and the preset is called &#8220;Aural&#8221;.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what it sounds like, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-07.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">boosted in volume by 5 dB<\/a>:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-5\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Aural.mp3?_=5\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Aural.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Aural.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Here is what the Flanger preset &#8220;Martians&#8221; sounds like:<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-8895-6\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Martians.mp3?_=6\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Martians.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Flanger-Martians.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>This next effect is created by lowering the pitch of the audio by 2%, then mixing it over the original audio.<\/p>\n<p>First, the pitch of the audio is lowered without changing the speed:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-08.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8914\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8914 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-08-300x173.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" the original.\u00a0 This can be done in many ways, but I use a feature called Mix Paste:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-10.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8917\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8917 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-10-300x231.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Mix-Pitch-Background-Noise.mp3?_=8\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Mix-Pitch-Background-Noise.mp3\">http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/MELI-example-Mix-Pitch-Background-Noise.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>Effects can be combined, like this example which adds the &#8220;mixed pitch&#8221; effect with the FFT frequency cutoff with a distortion preset called &#8220;bow curve 1&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-11.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8919\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter is also another method to make a robotic voice, but results can vary, and it may not work depending on the clarity of the source audio.\u00a0 The method is to use the Stretch plugin, and to first speed up the audio to twice its speed (without changing pitch), then to slow down the audio to half of its new speed (without changing pitch).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-12.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8921\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8921 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.gratuitousscience.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Robot-Voice-Audio-12-300x173.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" are also vocoder effects, auto-tune, and other electronic processing tricks that can be done to voices to make them sound robotic, but those are beyond what I can do with my software.<\/p>\n<p>I hope
