Song of the Day – “Kow Kow Calqulator” by Steve Miller Band

This song came up in conversation while I was getting a ride home from my friend Uncle Furry.  I asked him if he had ever heard of Kow Kow Calqulator, to which he responded “no”.  That, I’m guessing, is what most people would have said.

But onward I pressed.  “Did you know,” I said, “That Kow Kow Calqulator was a very smooth operator?  And that he had himself a pet alligator?  And that he kept it in a chrome elevator?”

Again, Uncle Furry responded “No”.

Now, I’m not the type to just go making shit up.  Actually, I am.  When I said I wasn’t, I was making that up.

So to prove that I wasn’t making this up… about Mr. Calqulator… Here is today’s “Song of the Day”.

I bought this album in 1993.  I have it on cassette, and I pretty much wore it right out.  When I first started listening to “Classic Rock”, I heard plenty of Steve Miller songs, but they were mainly from the late 70s.

This album collects all his awesome stuff from the late 60s to early 70s, which is MUCH better.  Not so much chart success, but better tunage.

I fucking love the sound of this album, and I even have a reconstructed version of it made from tracks compiled from all his CDs which I bought.  These are great tunes and the production on them is warm and natural.  And lots of them have piano great Nicky Hopkins on them.  He wasn’t a band member, but he played on lots of late 60s and 70s rock albums.  The Stones used him a lot.

He’s a Scientologist though.  Weird.  Poor bastard.  Actually, being a Scientologist he probably is literally poor after being conned out of all his money.

But enough about weirdo space cults that destroy lives.  Back to the music.

Actually, I’ve pretty much run out of things to say.   So I’ll leave you all with a word in parting.
