Song of the Day – “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” by Pink Floyd

35 years ago today, Syd Barrett wandered suddenly into Abbey Road studios and visited his former bandmates in Pink Floyd as they were working on the final mix of this song.

I just noticed this coincidence of a coincidence as I coincidentally listened to some articles about Pink Floyd on Wikipedia.  My usual Vegetation Day routine of playing a very old video game and reading Wikipedia has got me into reading articles about every Pink Floyd album and every Pink Floyd song on those albums.

I was hitting that “Random article” link when something popped up… I don’t even remember what it was.  Anyway, I haven’t listened to much Pink Floyd for a while because of that “overplayed” phenomenon.  Now that I haven’t listened to any radio stations for several years, I could probably enjoy “Dark Side of the Moon” again or even “The Wall”.

But I was always more a fan of their mid-period stuff from “More” to “Echoes”.  I especially like the “Atom Heart Mother” and “Ummagumma” albums.  I think they’re just dandy.  Oddly enough, those are what the members of Pink Floyd later tried to distance themselves from.  I’ve read snippets of interviews from each of those guys dissing those albums.  Well, Roger Waters can fucking keep “The Final Cut”, I’ll keep listening to the mid-period stuff and telling everyone it’s their best stuff.

Anyway, since I’m off topic again, here’s some links to a BBC documentary about Syd Barrett that I just watched:

And you might be wondering why I haven’t posted a YouTube link for this song of this day.  Well, most people probably own it already.  But if you want to search through YouTube yourself go for it.

All this talk of Pink Floyd reminds me I need to Mikeify some stuff I have lying around on some backup DVDs and hard drives.  I have a bootleg performance of, you guessed it, Atom Heart Mother that I need to find.

I’m off to do that, as well as laundry.  Word, etc.
