Song of the Day – “The Oppressed Song” by Bob Marley and the Wailers

It’s time that we sat down and had a chat about Bob Marley.  Today, while I was one of about only seven fucking people at work, I decided to play some music.  Normally I can’t do this because I need to hear my name being paged, delivery trucks arriving and stupid people asking for help getting their shoelaces untangled from being tied together left-to-right.

How that happens in the first place is one of life’s unanswerable questions.

But since I was alone at work today… Bob Marley got to strut his stuff on my HP2133 MiniNote.  I have pretty much everything Bob ever recorded, so there was more than enough to fill an 8 hour stretch.  9 hours to be exact.

Ya Man.  Today’s song is called “The Oppressed Song” and I got it from 1973’s “Burnin'” album.  The song must have been a B Side, because it wasn’t on the actual LP release.  Now, if a song THIS good is delegated to a B Side, you know you have one fucking KILLER album, and certainly “Burnin'” is all good from start to finish.  Did I say good?  I meant great.

But I digress.  I hadn’t noticed this song when I first got into Bob, and even when I bought all the remastered and deluxe editions of those albums, this song didn’t really stand out.  But then it came up on my iPod a couple of weeks ago, as I defiantly spat at Winter’s minus fucking 30 degrees face.  Island rhythms in the face of the cold spell!

What I and I am trying to say is that I noticed this song in a big way.  I listened to it again when I got home that day, and today I’ve heard it not once, not twice, but thrice.  What gets me saying “FUCK YEAH!!!” inside is that awesome (god, I use that word too much) synth riff.  It’s just a simple, bluesy minor-key riff played over what is mainly in a major key.  I don’t know SHIT about music theory, so someone correct me if I and I am wrong.

But MAN, does it really make the song good.  It’s a great tune anyway, and Bunny Wailer’s voice has never sounded stronger to me than on this tune.

And for (as always) no reason… I’m gonna “derail dis train… I’m leavin’….. and it won’t be too long, whether I’m right or I’m wrong”.

I have a bootleg (can’t really be bootleg if it’s been released on CD in Japan, can it?) recording of a radio show the band did in L.A. I think that was also in 1973.  But the story behind it is priceless.

The Wailers were supporting Sly & The Family Stone on tour.  If you know anything about Sly & The Family Stone, you know that they never seemed to get their shit together to actually perform when they were booked for shows.  Lots of times they were late.  Lots of times they sucked ass because they were too fucked up on various drugs.  Sometimes they didn’t even fucking show up at all.

Cocaine.  Helluva drug.

Back when this tour was going on… The Wailers were opening up and BRINGING THE FUCKING HOUSE DOWN.  Not even Sly & The Family Stone could follow the mighty Bob Marley and his Righteous Reggae Rhythm Rebels.

Sly, being sly, thought “To hell with that!”, right after thinking “Oh, shit, my bass player wants to kill me so I better carry a fucking loaded gun around with me everywhere I go”, and proceeded to kick Bob and those fabulous Wailers off the tour.

He did so in L.A., and when one of the local radio stations heard about that, they immediately booked Bob and the Wailers on for an on-air concert.  The concert is no doubt the BEST playing I’ve heard that band do.  They were pissed off and they had something to prove.  The best Sly could muster later on was to show up to some awards show 20 years late wearing an orange mohawk.

So… rambling right along… Get that radio show if you ever find it for sale.  My version is called “Studio Recordings More in Matrix”.  That title makes no sense.  It’s Japanese.  Meh.

I’ve run out of things to say, so here for you all is this exact same post, translated into Jamaican!
